Characters in CHOJIN LOCKE (page 4 of 5)

There are many characters who play a major role at one time or another in CHOJIN LOCKE, and categorizing and synopsizing them all would be a monumental task. Here is a brief introduction to the characters mentioned earlier.

Locke - "Just Locke" - the main character in this story. Locke is immortal and nearly omnipotent. As the stories progress, he learns new talents and abilities. By the end of the current history Locke seems almost a demigod, not only because of his power but also because of his extraordinary ability to control events. This is shown most strongly in "Teardrops of a Saint."
Locke leads a solitary life. He uses his powers to "waka-gaeri," or make himself younger. Perhaps this helps him remain young at heart in the face of his incredible age. Despite his great power and influence, Locke exemplifies that which is most human and noble in the story.

Irina Malkelov - There is usually at least one character in each story that somehow becomes closely tied with Locke. In "The Infinite Project," Irina is a saboteur sent to destroy the ship the Infinite 1. She enlists Locke's help early on by posing as a girl in his middle school class. When she discovers that she was betrayed and tossed aside by her employers, Locke saves her. She becomes the only one to realize and retain the memory of how powerful Locke truly is.

Cougar (left) and Riola (right)
Riola - She is the "The Red Serpent," one of 200 very powerful esper clones created to fulfill some mysterious project. Riola was discovered near a starship crash site when she was very young. Her parents were later killed while a group of esper-hunters were tracking her down. Locke saved her and decided to bring her along with him somewhere safe. During this journey Riola showed very great and surprising power. Locke suspected that she was The Red Serpent, the next clone in the program that was to be activated. She died at the hand of Cougar when she would not obey his orders to kill Locke. She remembered Locke's kindness and refused. This kindness also caused her to insist that she was not a thing and had a right to make her own decisions.

Cougar - Another one of the 200 clones in the mysterious project, he was found in a desert by a pair hunting sand dragons at the beginning of "The Red Serpent." Later Cougar would have dreams and eventually recalled a purpose in life: the next phase of the grand plan. However, he would need the power of the Red Serpent.
After killing Riola, he imprisoned Locke in a stasis device. Cougar was without purpose because of the death of Joanne. Locke's and Riola's words kept haunting him. When another esper shows up and attempts to control him as he attempted to control Riola he fights back but is overcome. However Locke is freed in the battle. As he is dying, Cougar asks Locke what his purpose was, why was he created? Locke replies that it was to live and heals Cougar.
Cougar then joins Locke in The Keeper of the Book,"and "The Final Quest." He finally dies in "The King of Darkness."

Ran - He is the creator of the supercomputer Elana," which begins a plan to destroy all of the espers. When Locke, Nia, and Azelia manage to destroy Elana in "New World Command" Ran goes into shock, for he had loved his creation and it apparently loved him back. Now without his memory, Nia and Locke care for Ran until a backup of Elana is reactivated in "Mirror Ring." Ran comes into his own when he helps Locke and Nia destroy Elana for good.
He then goes on to help Locke restore Nia to her throne on Raffnole, later marrying Nia and ruling by her side. The last we see of Ran is in "Stargazer."

Nia - She is the displaced queen of the hidden planet Raffnole. We first meet her as one of the brainwashed espers who try to destroy Tsua in New World Command at the command of Elana. Later she lives with Locke helping care for Ran, who has developed a crush on her. With Ran and Locke she later regains her throne in "Sword of Light." It is in this story that her love for Ran and Ran's love and need for her are fulfilled. They marry and rule Raffnole together.

Nagato - In some ways Nagato is one of the most pivotal characters in the story. We first meet Nagato in "Mind buster," where he tries to convince Locke to join him in helping Professor Raiga to isolate the planets for the sake of humanity. Eventually Nagato comes to believe that Professor Raiga's plan is wrong. Although too late to save Raffnole, Nagato eventually unifies the rest of the planets in the first Galactic Empire. With this structure in place Nagato's heirs set up the cosmic computer later responsible for Cougar and Riola. Twenty years after claiming the throne of the Galactic Empire Nagato is assassinated.
